Bringing home a new puppy comes with plenty of firsts: the first walk, first vet visit, first night in a new home, and eventually, the first grooming appointment. Starting grooming early can help your puppy become comfortable with being brushed, bathed, handled, and having their paws, ears, and coat examined.
The goal of a puppy’s first grooming experience should not necessarily be a perfect haircut. It should be creating a positive association with the grooming process. Puppies are still learning about unfamiliar sounds, surfaces, people, and handling, so short and positive grooming sessions are often more effective than trying to accomplish everything at once.
Before scheduling the first professional grooming appointment, spend time handling your puppy at home. Gently touch their paws, ears, legs, tail, and face. Introduce a soft brush and reward calm behavior with praise or a small treat. You can also let your puppy become familiar with the sound of a hair dryer, electric toothbrush, or similar low-level household noise from a comfortable distance. The American Kennel Club recommends introducing grooming through short sessions and positive reinforcement rather than overwhelming a young puppy.
When choosing a groomer, look for someone experienced with puppies and willing to take the process slowly. A first visit may involve little more than brushing, nail care, handling, and introducing the puppy to the grooming table and equipment. That is perfectly fine. A calm first experience can make future grooming much easier.
Keep your puppy’s vaccinations and veterinary recommendations in mind before taking them into environments where other dogs may be present. Ask the groomer what vaccinations or health documentation they require.
Between professional appointments, regular brushing can help prevent tangles and give you an opportunity to check your puppy’s skin and coat. Dogs with longer or curly coats may need considerably more frequent brushing than short-haired breeds.
Most importantly, be patient. Puppies learn through repetition. Turning grooming into a normal, rewarding part of life can make brushing, nail trims, baths, and professional grooming less stressful for both you and your dog.
