Best Summer Activities for Dog Owners

January 9, 2018by BoldThemes0

Summer gives dog owners plenty of opportunities to spend time outside with their pets, but in Jacksonville and throughout Northeast Florida, warm weather also means planning activities around heat and humidity.

One of the simplest summer activities is an early-morning dog walk. Getting outside before temperatures climb can provide exercise, enrichment, and plenty of new smells without exposing your dog to the hottest part of the day. Evening walks can also work well once sidewalks begin cooling.

If your dog enjoys water, supervised swimming can be another fun option. A dog-friendly pool, splash area, or safe swimming location can provide exercise while helping your dog cool down. Not every dog naturally knows how to swim, however, so introduce water gradually and supervise closely. Canine life jackets are especially helpful around boats, deeper water, and unfamiliar swimming areas.

A trip to a pet-friendly park can provide a change of scenery. Bring fresh drinking water, a collapsible bowl, waste bags, and a leash. Look for shaded areas where your dog can rest between activities.

For dogs that prefer staying home, summer fun does not have to involve a big outing. Try a sprinkler, shallow dog pool, frozen enrichment toy, scent game, or short training session in the backyard. Indoor activities can be particularly useful during the hottest afternoon hours.

Beach trips can also be enjoyable for dogs that are comfortable around sand, waves, people, and other animals. Check local regulations before going and watch for hot sand, strong currents, dehydration, and excessive saltwater consumption. The AKC recommends providing shade and fresh water, supervising dogs around water, and avoiding strenuous exercise during extreme heat.

Whatever activity you choose, pay attention to your dog. Heavy or unusual panting, weakness, confusion, excessive drooling, vomiting, or difficulty coordinating movement can be warning signs of overheating and require prompt action and veterinary guidance.

Summer should be fun, not exhausting. Adjust activities for your dog’s age, breed, fitness level, health, and personality.

And when work, travel, or a busy schedule gets in the way, a dependable dog walker can help maintain your dog’s normal exercise and potty-break routine—even during Jacksonville’s long summer season.
